By the Shore

It had been a week since he spoke with Ulmo.  A week since there had been confessions he never would have expected.  A week since Ulmo had quite literally exploded and sank to the depths of his sea.

It had been a very long week.

Even prior to their discussion, he had started to fear that the Vala had decided to ignore him, that he was turning his back to those on land for the first time and sharing a deaf ear to their calls for him.  He knew so little of what the Vala did on a day-to-day basis, he could only hope he was busy or something important came up.  He did know for at least a while Ulmo had been sleeping.

For nearly a week, Círdan had not gone swimming or waded through the surf as the tides changed.  He had not joined the fishermen on their morning sails or even the patrol ships that monitored the coast.  Both of which were daily events for him for thousands and thousands of years but now he was avoiding the water.  It even helped that Ossë was absent, it allowed him to avoid the water all the better.

It broke his heart to do so.  He longed to dive in the clear, crisp water and swim.  Each lap of the surf was like a finger curling and beckoning to him to join it but he had to resist.  It was one of the harder things he had done in quite some time.

So he thought of the maia to lighten his mood, he would touch the brooch for some manner of connection between them.  It was comforting until his thoughts turned to Ulmo or Ossë thought of him.  Then immediately the smile would drop and the good mood would disappear and guilt would replace it.

It was not fair, he had waited nearly Four Ages to find someone and to have this chance at happiness unlike others he had known thus far and now he felt guilty for it.  He tried to avoid it and it was all because Ulmo had decided he wanted what he now felt he could not have.

He cursed under his breath, ducking down to grab a large shell from the sand and fling it towards the sea.  He also quickly sidestepped and ducked since he knew there tended to be an automatic reaction to doing such a thing.  All he wanted in this land was to enjoy his happiness and now it felt out of reach, it felt like he had done something wrong.
