Letters | Círdan & Poppy

Poppy bounced along beside of him happily, feeling quite pleased with both her choice and his willingness to comply. To think of it; She was going to see a ship that was a twin to that of the one Rossiel had sailed on! This bit of information would absolutely be going into her letter, and Poppy could just imagine the elleth’s surprise when she read of it. She found herself getting a bit ahead of her elven guide, her eagerness even outmatching his longer strides. She would like to see all of the ships the harbor was home to, of course, but none of those seemed quite as exciting.

“How long does it take for a ship to be completed?” she asked, willing herself to slow her pace a bit. After all, it wasn’t as if the ship would leave before she was able to see it. Poppy also decided that perhaps Círdan could answer a few of the many questions she now had regarding the vessels, and sailing in general. “Do you build a new ship each time a group sails, or do you reuse the ships? I imagine it takes a long time to sail across the seas, so I doubted you could wait for it to return each time.“

"It can take quite some time,” he chuckled at her excitement. He remembered Eärendil having the same eager disposition about seeing the ships and getting to learn about them.  It was certainly a fond memory in his heart.  "These are built more for their hauling capacity and for comfort, so we tend to spend longer making sure they will provide a comfortable journey for those that have not been aboard a ship before,“ and even still there were plenty of cases of sea sicknesses or the woozy feeling.

"I do build a new ship, the way to Valinor is a limited opening and it does not usually allow for the ships to return.  Only in rare cases do others come to my harbor, normally I am sending my work to Olwë,” he grinned but made sure not to mention that some did not survive the journey or that there were perils.  He did not wish to upset the young Hobbit.

“Lately we only build these ships, we used to build warships and fishing vessels as well, but the abundant need for them has waned as the age progresses,” he pointed to some of the ships that were moored out beyond the docks.  They looked to be faster than the one that was docked at the harbor.  Towards the horizon there were smaller ships sailing about as the fresh catches of the day were being hauled in.
