War with Angmar

Okay, so here’s the short (insane laughter) version of the War with Angmar. Around the year 1300 of the Third Age, Angmar (ruled by the Witch King, who was secretly a nazgul) became an evil presence in the north. At this point Arnor had been split into three smaller kingdoms: Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur.

Angmar took advantage of the weakened, divided kingdoms and attacked Rhudaur first. He replaced it’s Dunedain king with one of the hill-men (who were not of Numenorean descent), who was secretly a servant of the Witch King.

Arveleg, king of Arthedain (the only kingdom still ruled by a descendant of Isildur, by the way), teamed up with Cardolan and the elves of Lindon to drive the enemy back north. They then set up a guard along the Weather Hills, the Great Road, and the river Hoarwell. Instead of attacking the men, Angmar took the opportunity to focus its attack on Rivendell instead, and the valley was besieged in 1409.

In the same year a huge army attacked from Angmar. Arveleg was killed in battle, along with most of Cardolan’s people. Arveleg’s young son Araphor (along with Cirdan) managed to keep Angmar’s army out of Arthedain at least, and those few left in Cardolan managed to defend their main settlement at the Barrow Downs.

Elrond got reinforcements from Lorien, and the siege of Rivendell ended. The elves from the east, combined with Cirdan’s elves in the west, managed to push Angmar back, giving the region peace for some time.

A couple hundred years later, in 1636, the Great Plague swept across Middle Earth. Those few Dunedain still living in Cardolan were killed, and the Witch King quickly sent the barrow-wights to infest the Barrow Downs, making it useless as a future refuge for men.

In 1974 Angmar attacked Arthedain suddenly, taking their fortress of Fornost. The Dunedain fled west into Lindon, except for their king, Arvedui, who ran north towards the ice bay of Forochel. He stayed there until Cirdan sent a ship to retrieve him. However, the ship sank in a storm and Arvedui died. His son, Aranarth, recognized that Arnor was completely destroyed, and instead of becoming king became the first Chieftain of the Dunedain.

During all of this, Gondor had its own problems and enemies to worry about. But finally their enemies were defeated, and Earnil the king sent his son and Gondor’s army to Arnor to support their northern Dunedain kin. But he didn’t arrive until a year after Angmar’s victory, and there was no Arnor to save. But, Gondor’s army joined with whatever was left of the warriors of the Dunedain, as well as the elves of Lindon.

The great army marched to Fornost (where the Witch King had been living since he conquered it.) There they defeated his army in battle, and the Witch King fled towards Carn Dum, his capital in Angmar. Again the army of elves and men followed him, joined now by Glorfindel leading the elves of Rivendell (and even some archers from the Shire!) Then there was another battle, and Angmar’s army was pretty solidly defeated.

Finally the Witch King himself came forward and challenged Earnur. Though the man was prepared to fight, his horse panicked and bolted. The Witch King laughed, mocking Earnur. But then Glorfindel basically scared the Witch King away, and that was the end of the War with Angmar.

I hope this gave you the information you were looking for. If you have a more detailed question, definitely let me know!
