The Calm Before the Storm

“If that’s wrong, I’d prefer you not be right,” Ossë drawled, shifting to press his hips and shoulder closer against him. “I’ve been tempted since I arrived. You were my last stop for that reason.” Which was true; he’d stopped by to snuggle his wife, taken a quick tour of the other coast, and saved Círdan for the last visit before going to speak with his brother. If he was going to feel like a terrible brother and vassal, he’d at least like to feel like a decent friend and lover first.

He sighed though and curled in a bit so he could rest his head over Círdan’s chest, wanting to listen to his breathing and his heart. “But it won’t get any better for waiting more. I’ve already put this off too long — ages too long, depending how you see it. And the longer I hesitate, the more chance for another damned beluga to spill my secrets for me. For better or for worse, it should be me telling him these things.” Another pang of terror gripped him at the idea of ‘for worse’ and he tensed, giving his Elf a squeeze.

“I can only hope Father and Mânawenûz are right and he’ll love me no matter how hurt and angry he is.” The little elleth straightened and sat up, stretching to try to be eye to eye with Círdan. Despite the more rounded and delicate features and the smaller frame, Ossë somehow managed to still retain the same air and bearings from his usual fana, still strong and confident. He cupped Círdan’s face in his hands. “I wanted you to have that before I went, because there’s every chance he’ll find a way to further punish me for my mistakes and wrongdoings. And whatever he decides, I’ll deserve it, and more. In case I’m unable to visit you in person, I admit I’m being selfish — I don’t want to be separated from you.”

Círdan held the other close in his arms, one hand smoothing along a bare arm while the other stayed hooked by his knees.  He was quiet as he listened to him, a frown settling in place as his brow knit and he tried to make sense of the words.  It was hard seeing as he did not have the full information so he could only keep up and offer support where possible.

“He has always loved you and I do not think you have done anything worse than has been done in the past,” he murmured.  He knew of Ossë’s past, the times before they had ever met and he was aware of how differently life could have gone.  Would he have ever met him or would those that reached the shores be tempted by a darker song and fate in their meeting?  No, those were poisonous half thoughts that would never have a foothold in reality.  He had resisted and saw reason, he had turned to loved ones and Ulmo had been among them.  If Ulmo could love him then, surely anything that followed would seem like a small ripple in the ocean rather than a large splash in a small pond by comparison.

It still nagged at him to be so in the dark when it came to things that mattered to those that meant so much to him.  It was not just Ossë at stake here, Ulmo held an equal hold for him even though time spent with the Vala was few and far between, he still did not wish for him to suffer such upsets.  He had to trust Ossë and he did, he trusted him completely and had no reason to hesitate with it.

“This time I do not mind you being selfish,” he grinned, turning his head so he could press a kiss to one of Ossë’s palms.  "I hope he is not too hard to speak with, he was very closed off when I tried the other day,“ but the maia had more experience with him so hopefully it would work out better for him.  "As much as I would love to keep you here, you should not keep him waiting.”
