The Calm Before the Storm

Ossë huffed a laugh and shook his head slightly, shifting to wind his arms around Círdan’s shoulders. “No, not that. I would decline that, too, that’s a terrible gift.” He chattered low and settled his head against his shoulder again. “I’ll be alright. I already made him promise he wouldn’t kill me or give my job to a beluga, I think I can manage anything else. It won’t be the first time I’ve intentionally angered him.” He paused a moment and tightened his hold. “Just between you and I, it’s me who usually runs. He’s big and powerful, but I’ve got speed on my side. I’ll be fine,” he assured in a whisper.

With a deep breath and a soft whine, he dropped one arm down into his lap. “No, I think you’ll like this gift. It’s related to the being open part, not the running in terror part.” Lifting the box wrapped in parchment and tied with seaweed, he pulled away a bit to offer a smile as he gave the package a tempting shake.

He still worried about Ossë, he also worried for Ulmo.  It was not so much the physical side that scared him but he knew the weight words could carry and the damage they could inflict.  If others were allowed to survive through more grievous actions, he doubted the Valar would allow Ulmo to snuff out Ossë over a few secrets that had no chance of destroying all of existence.

His attention focused on the box when he heard something rattle inside of it, his brows raising.  Círdan caught the delicate wrist, brushing his thumb over the soft skin but his grip was slack.  "I have always enjoyed your gifts,“ he reminded him.  "Does this mean you are going to show me what’s inside or are you going to draw this out to put off seeing Ulmo?”
